BBC Working Lunch - Broadband and telephone Q & A
Programme shown on: 30/03/07
All your questions, answered by telecoms expert Eddie Murphy
Jim Monk says, "I have been on Orange Broadband for a long time but over the years I have had an increasing problem when it comes to sending out e-mails to groups. At first I could send messages to groups containing over a hundred recipients but now if I send out a group message containing more than 15 members I get a message saying 'too many recipients'. Is this restriction unique to Orange customers or do other ISPs have their own rationing regime?
This is not unique to Orange, although setting the limit at 15 recipients is rather restrictive. ISPs do this to counteract spammers from launching their traffic onto the net from their network...............

BBC Working Lunch - Mobile phones: Your questions
Programme shown on: 24/11/06
Your queries were tackled by Eddie Murphy of the Communications Research Network.
A recent survey says that if you're one of the thousands of people who use a 'pay as you go' mobile phone deal - then you're probably being ripped off. It surveyed 120,000 people and found they were paying up to 600% more for their calls than consumers who were on contract. Is there truth in that?

Working Lunch - Phone questions
Programme shown on: 12/05/06
"All your questions, answered by Bryan Glick, Managing Editor of Computing and
Eddie Murphy, an independent consultant at the Communication
Research Network.
Many companies still persist in calling '0870' numbers 'national rate' when
calls can cost 8p a minute - up to 16 times more than a call to Europe or even
New Zealand. Is this practice not deceitful? Ofcom has recommended (but not
made compulsory) the need to make a tariff announcement before the call goes
through. Is anything else being done?
Bill Fraser, Glasgow.
They are perfectly entitled to call 0870 numbers national rate because they
are charged at the equivalent of the price of a national call....."

Programme shown on: 28/10/05
"All your questions, answered by Bryan Glick, Managing Editor of Computing and
Eddie Murphy, Manager of Communication Research Network - part
of a joint venture between Cambridge University and Massachusetts
Institute of Technology.
Frederick in London: The programme has highlighted 0870 phone numbers recently,
but what about 07000 numbers? I live in a block of flats and our managing agent
has said this is a free number for residents to contact them. On checking with
BT however, I discovered the charge is 16.5p per minute at peak times and 10p
off peak. It is also used in hospitals for patients. Who is gaining out of this
rip-off?
Personal numbering is a service which allocates the customer a number which
that customer....."

Working Lunch - Phones queries
Programme shown on: 11/03/05
"In Consuming Issues, Alan Stevens, a communications consultant
and Eddie Murphy, a telecommunications
consultant answered your
questions on phones.
Are mobile phone companies obliged to provide their customers with
information from the Company's records regarding phone usage? I
have been wrongly accused by the Police of using my mobile phone
whilst driving my car. My phone Billing Account shows I did not
make a call but Vodafone will not confirm I did not receive a call
(i.e. my phone was not in use). I understand that the police can
obtain this information from mobile phone companies but they have
declined to do so in this instance. I therefore cannot prove my
innocence in court and I am most likely to be found guilty as it
is my word against a policeman's word.
Mobile phone companies do keep records about outgoing calls made
by their customers......"
